New Jaecoo Settings Guide: What to Set Up First

In short: the first settings to review

  1. Adjust the driving position and save a memory position if your trim supports it
  2. Pair your phone, then set up Apple CarPlay or Android Auto while the vehicle is parked
  3. For an E5 Electric, J7 PHEV or J8 PHEV, activate the JAECOO app and test the functions available on your car
  4. Review keyless entry, walk-away locking, selective unlocking, mirror folding and tailgate settings rather than assuming they work as they did on your previous car
  5. Set the display brightness, date, time, units, sound levels and any useful steering-wheel shortcut
  6. Learn what each driver-assistance warning does before changing it. Some safety features may return to their default after every restart
  7. EV and PHEV owners should check charging schedules, departure times and preconditioning but avoid creating conflicting schedules in the car, app and wallbox
  8. Save the correct manual and take photographs of any settings you may want to recreate after an update or reset

A new Jaecoo has enough menus, alerts and connected features to make the first few journeys feel more complicated than they need to be. The answer is not to change everything at once. It is to set up the essentials while parked, understand the warnings that affect everyday driving and leave the less important menus until later.

This guide covers the current UK Jaecoo range, including the J5 petrol, E5 Electric, J7 petrol, J7 Hybrid, J7 PHEV and J8 PHEV. The exact wording, location and availability of a setting can vary by model, trim, build date and software version. Use the controls actually shown by your vehicle and the manual supplied for it.

Important: This is an independent setup guide, not an official operating manual and not a recommendation to disable safety equipment. Make changes only while safely parked. A driver-assistance feature remains an aid rather than a substitute for observation, judgement and control of the vehicle.

1. Which settings apply to your Jaecoo?

Not every function belongs to every powertrain or trim. This matters most with the connected app, powered seats, memory functions, head-up display, ambient lighting, powered tailgate and charging controls.

Vehicle What to set up Important limitation
J5 petrol Driving position, phone connection, locking, displays, sound and fitted driver-assistance systems Do not assume the JAECOO connected app is supported
E5 Electric All of the above, plus the JAECOO app, charging schedule, charge-related settings and preconditioning Some comfort and display features still depend on trim
J7 petrol Driving position, phone connection, locking, displays, sound, driver assistance and drive-mode preferences Equipment varies between two- and four-wheel-drive versions and trims
J7 Hybrid In-car settings, phone connection, fitted driver assistance and hybrid displays Memory seats, mirror memory and wireless smartphone mirroring are trim-dependent
J7 PHEV In-car settings, phone connection, JAECOO app, charging, preconditioning and power-management preferences Charging and hybrid menus can change with software
J8 PHEV In-car settings, phone connection, JAECOO app, charging, preconditioning, seating and fitted assistance features Six- and seven-seat versions have different seat controls and layouts

JAECOO UK's current mobile-app page describes the connected service as being for EV and PHEV models. A petrol or self-charging-hybrid owner should therefore not assume that a failed attempt to add the vehicle means something is wrong. Separately, the official J7 Hybrid specification shows why trim checks matter: seat memory, mirror memory and wireless smartphone mirroring are listed on one version but not the other.

2. Set the driving position first

Begin with the settings that affect safe control of the vehicle. Do this before experimenting with themes, ambient lighting or sound effects.

  1. Adjust the seat so you can fully press the pedals without stretching
  2. Set the seatback and head restraint so that you are supported without sitting too far from the steering wheel
  3. Adjust the steering wheel for a clear view of the driver display
  4. Set both exterior mirrors and the interior mirror
  5. If fitted, position the head-up display so the information is clearly visible without obstructing your view
  6. Save a seat or driver-memory position if your trim provides one

If more than one person drives the car, save separate memory positions where the vehicle allows it and test what the memory button actually recalls. Depending on model and trim, it may include the driver's seat, mirrors or other preferences, but it should not be assumed to save every infotainment and safety setting.

Before saving a position: make sure a rear passenger, child seat or object cannot be trapped if the seat later moves automatically. If your vehicle has a driver-seat welcome or easy-entry function, test its travel before deciding whether to leave it enabled.

3. Connect your phone, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto

Pairing a phone is easiest while the vehicle is stationary with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled. The first connection may require you to approve contact, call, message, location or notification permissions on both the phone and the vehicle.

A sensible first connection order

  1. Remove any previous phones that should no longer be listed
  2. Give your phone a recognisable Bluetooth name if several household phones look similar
  3. Pair it through the vehicle's phone or connectivity screen
  4. Approve only the permissions you want to use.
  5. Choose whether the phone should handle calls, media or both
  6. Start Apple CarPlay or Android Auto when prompted
  7. Make a short test call and play audio before relying on it for a journey

Official UK specifications confirm wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the J5 petrol and E5 Electric. However, support is not identical across every model and trim. For example, the current J7 Hybrid specification lists wireless smartphone mirroring on the higher trim rather than both versions.

If the wireless connection is unreliable, first forget the vehicle on the phone and remove the phone from the vehicle before restarting both and pairing them again. Also check that Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and the relevant CarPlay or Android Auto permission remain enabled. A wired connection, where supported, needs a data-capable cable and the correct USB port - a charge-only cable cannot carry the required data.

Apple and Google maintain their own current troubleshooting instructions for CarPlay and Android Auto. Do not attempt to repair a connection or read a pairing code while driving. UK law restricts holding and using a phone while driving, including while stopped in traffic. For more information, see the current GOV.UK rules.

4. Activate the JAECOO app where supported

For supported EV and PHEV models, the JAECOO app is separate from Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and ordinary Bluetooth pairing. CarPlay or Android Auto displays compatible phone apps in the vehicle and the JAECOO app provides connected vehicle functions.

JAECOO UK currently describes a five-stage activation process: app launch, vehicle verification, information submission, remote-control setup and passcode creation. Its official page lists functions including:

  • Battery level, range, charging status and estimated remaining charge time.
  • Vehicle location and navigation back to the parked vehicle.
  • Tyre-pressure information.
  • Charging and departure schedules.
  • Climate preconditioning and selected heated functions where the vehicle supports them.
  • Remote horn and lights.

Start at the official JAECOO mobile-app page, use its current download link and follow the in-app verification process. If your VIN is rejected or already associated with another account, ask the supplying retailer or JAECOO support to check the vehicle record rather than repeatedly creating new accounts.

Test the app before depending on it

After activation, compare the displayed battery level, tyre pressures and location with the vehicle. Test a low-risk remote function such as the lights while standing beside the car. Remote commands depend on the vehicle's connection, account status and service availability, so do not treat the app as the only way to unlock the car, check a tyre or control charging.

Service status can change. If the app suddenly stops updating, check JAECOO's current service notice before assuming the vehicle has developed a fault.

5. Review locking, entry, mirrors and tailgate settings

Automatic entry and locking features are convenient only when their behaviour matches what you expect. Depending on equipment, your Jaecoo may offer settings for approach unlocking, walk-away locking, automatic locking once moving, driver-door-only unlocking, mirror folding, welcome lighting, electronic child locks or powered-tailgate height.

An official UK J5 manual, available from the JAECOO download centre, lists examples including approach unlock/walk-away lock, automatic locking, driver-door-only unlocking, automatic mirror folding and adjustable powered-tailgate height. It also makes clear that available buttons and settings depend on vehicle configuration.

Test each access choice deliberately

  • Selective unlocking: decide whether the first unlock action should open only the driver's door or every door.
  • Walk-away locking: with the physical key in your possession, move away and confirm the expected audible or visual acknowledgement.
  • Approach unlocking: check how close you must be and whether repeated movement near the parked car causes unwanted unlocking.
  • Mirror folding: confirm whether the mirrors fold on locking, and remember that folded mirrors are not proof on their own that every door is secure.
  • Tailgate height: set a safe maximum before opening it in a low garage.
  • Child locks: understand whether they are mechanical or electronic and which doors they affect.

Never test automatic locking by leaving the only key, a child or an animal inside the vehicle. Keep the physical key with you until you understand exactly how your car behaves.

6. Personalise the display, sound and shortcuts

Once the driving position and access settings are correct, make the information easy to read and the frequently used controls easy to reach.

Setting to review Why it is worth checking
Brightness and light/dark mode Prevents a screen from being dazzling at night or difficult to read in bright daylight
Date, time and time zone Keeps charging schedules, departure times and journey information aligned
Distance, temperature and consumption units Avoids misreading pressure, economy or range information
Navigation, call, media and warning volumes Stops one source from overwhelming another without muting important alerts
Instrument and head-up-display layout Puts the most useful information in the driver's natural line of sight
Steering-wheel shortcut Can provide quicker access to a genuinely frequent function where customisation is supported
Ambient lighting and themes Purely personal - best left until the functional setup is complete

Avoid turning every alert volume to zero simply because the default mix is irritating. Adjust individual sources where the system allows it, then take a short drive to check that navigation instructions, calls and important vehicle warnings remain distinct.

7. Understand the driver-assistance settings

Driver-assistance menus are where new owners are most likely to make hurried changes. Similar-sounding features can have very different purposes, so first learn the terminology used by your own car.

  • Speed Limit Assist: identifies or displays speed-limit information and may issue a visual or audible warning.
  • Lane Departure Warning: warns when the vehicle appears to leave its lane unintentionally.
  • Lane Keep or Emergency Lane Keeping: may add steering assistance in defined circumstances.
  • Blind Spot Detection: warns about vehicles in monitored rear-side areas.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert or Braking: monitors crossing traffic while reversing and may warn or brake where fitted.
  • Door Open Warning: can warn occupants about approaching traffic or cyclists before a door is opened.
  • Forward-collision warning and autonomous emergency braking: warn of a possible collision and may apply braking under defined conditions.
  • Driver drowsiness or attention warning: monitors signs that may indicate fatigue or inattention.

The official J5 manual explains that assistance systems have operating limits and can be affected by weather, lighting, road markings, signs, cameras and radar conditions. It also states that its drowsiness/attention system is enabled by default because of regulatory requirements, and that the processed monitoring data is used immediately within the vehicle rather than stored. Read the relevant section of the official UK J5 owner manual for the exact system fitted to that model.

A practical way to review assistance settings

  1. Read the short description shown by the vehicle before changing the switch.
  2. Check whether the menu offers sensitivity, warning type or volume rather than only on/off.
  3. Change one setting at a time while parked.
  4. Use the car normally and decide whether the new warning mode is clearer.
  5. Recheck the setting after the vehicle has been switched off and restarted.

Why has the warning returned? Some safety features are designed or legally required to start each journey in a default state. A setting returning after restart does not necessarily mean the car failed to save your profile. Do not use unofficial software or coding tools to defeat safety systems but use the controls provided by the vehicle and follow the current manual.

8. Set up charging and energy features

This section applies to the E5 Electric, J7 PHEV and J8 PHEV. The most important job is not to activate every schedule available, but instead to make sure only one clear charging plan controls the session.

Avoid overlapping schedules

A charging time can potentially be set in the car, the JAECOO app or a smart wallbox. If two or three systems are waiting for different start times, charging may appear to have failed even though each device is following its own instruction.

  1. Choose one primary scheduler.
  2. Temporarily disable the other schedules while testing.
  3. Plug in and confirm that the vehicle recognises the cable.
  4. Check the expected start time in the system you have chosen.
  5. Verify later that charging actually began rather than relying only on a saved timetable.

Review the useful energy settings

  • Charge target: where offered, choose a normal everyday target and raise it when you need the full range.
  • Departure time: lets a supported vehicle prepare for a planned journey.
  • Preconditioning: heats or cools the cabin before departure and can preserve more driving range when the car is still plugged in.
  • Charging-current limit: use only if provided and if you understand why a lower limit is needed.
  • PHEV energy strategy: the J7 and J8 PHEV have hybrid-related settings that should be understood separately from the charging timetable.

Do not copy an E5 Electric charge limit blindly onto a PHEV. The full-electric and plug-in-hybrid batteries have different usable capacities and control strategies. Our separate guide explains whether to charge a Jaecoo to 80% or 100%, while the Jaecoo home-charging guide covers wallboxes, three-pin charging, Type 2 cables and current UK grants.

J7 PHEV owners can also read our model-specific explanation of EV, HEV, Initial, Smart and Forced settings.

9. Configure climate and comfort features

Climate settings are worth learning because heating, cooling, demisting and preconditioning affect comfort, visibility and, on EVs and PHEVs, electric range.

  • Learn the quickest way to demist the windscreen and rear window.
  • Set the automatic-climate temperature you normally prefer.
  • Check whether the vehicle remembers heated or ventilated-seat settings.
  • Choose whether recirculation should be controlled automatically or manually.
  • If supported, create a preconditioning or departure schedule in the JAECOO app.
  • Test any steering-wheel heating, seat heating or seat ventilation fitted to the vehicle.

JAECOO UK's app page lists remote cabin-temperature information and preconditioning functions, including selected heated features where supported. The exact equipment still depends on the vehicle: an app screen may show fewer controls than an image used in general marketing.

10. Check privacy, permissions and security

A connected car can contain contact lists, recent destinations, home and work addresses, account details, call history, Wi-Fi information and location permissions. Treat the infotainment system as a personal device rather than a disposable radio.

During setup

  • Approve only the phone permissions needed for the functions you intend to use.
  • Use a unique app password and protect the remote-control passcode.
  • Review location, geofence and notification permissions in both the app and phone settings.
  • Do not share remote access casually - check the official process before adding another user.
  • Keep the email address and mobile number connected to the account current.

Before selling, returning or part-exchanging the car

Remove paired phones, saved destinations, Wi-Fi credentials and personal accounts, then complete the official ownership-transfer or unbinding process. The official J5 manual specifically tells an owner to clear personal information from the vehicle terminal before resale or scrapping. A factory reset may be part of that process, but do not use it casually during ordinary troubleshooting because it can erase useful preferences and connections.

11. Record the software version and save the manual

Before contacting a dealer about a missing menu or inconsistent setting, record:

  • The exact model, trim and powertrain.
  • The vehicle identification number.
  • The infotainment or system version shown in the About screen.
  • The phone model and operating-system version.
  • The app version, if the issue concerns connected services.
  • A photograph or short video of the behaviour and any message displayed.

Use the official JAECOO download centre to obtain the correct owner manual and quick-start material. Do not install unofficial firmware, files or coding tools recommended in a social-media post. If an update is offered by the vehicle or retailer, read the instructions, ensure any required power or battery conditions are met and avoid interrupting the process.

12. Your first-week settings checklist

Priority Check Done when...
1 Seat, steering wheel and mirrors You have a comfortable position and clear view
2 Phone and smartphone mirroring Calls, audio and navigation connect as intended
3 JAECOO app, where supported The car is verified and basic vehicle data is current
4 Locking and access You understand selective unlock, walk-away lock and mirror behaviour
5 Display, units and sound Information is readable and alert volumes remain useful
6 Driver assistance You know what the main warnings mean and which settings reset
7 Charging and preconditioning One clear schedule has been tested successfully
8 Manual and software details The correct manual is saved and the version is recorded

If you have not yet collected the vehicle, start with our new Jaecoo collection-day checklist, which covers the condition, paperwork, keys, supplied equipment, charging leads and handover checks to complete before leaving the retailer.

13. What to try when a setting will not stay saved

The setting returns after every restart

First establish whether it is a safety feature designed to return to a default state. If it is a comfort or display preference, check whether you changed it under a temporary or different driver profile, whether a memory toggle is available, and whether the same behaviour is described in the manual.

Apple CarPlay or Android Auto keeps disconnecting

Remove the pairing at both ends, restart the phone and vehicle system, then reconnect from the beginning. Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi permissions for wireless use, or try a known-good data cable and the designated data USB port for a wired connection.

The JAECOO app shows old data

Check whether the vehicle has mobile connectivity, refresh the app, sign out and back in once, and check JAECOO's app page for a service notice. If the VIN or ownership link is the problem, contact the retailer or official support rather than creating repeated duplicate accounts.

Charging did not start

Check that the connector is fully inserted, the chargepoint has power and the vehicle has recognised the cable. Temporarily remove overlapping schedules and test an immediate charge. If a warning remains, follow the charger and vehicle instructions rather than repeatedly unplugging under load.

Menus no longer match a video or another owner's car

Compare the model, trim, powertrain and software version. Online videos frequently show another market or an earlier software release. Your current UK manual and the information displayed by your own vehicle are the stronger references.

14. Quick questions from new Jaecoo owners

What should I set up first in a new Jaecoo?

Start with the driving position, mirrors, phone connection, locking behaviour and an understanding of the main driver-assistance warnings. EV and PHEV owners should then test the app and one simple charging schedule.

Can I use the JAECOO app with a petrol or self-charging-hybrid model?

JAECOO UK's current app page describes the connected app as available for EV and PHEV models. Do not assume a J5 petrol, J7 petrol or J7 Hybrid can be added unless JAECOO or your retailer confirms support for that exact vehicle.

Why do some safety settings switch back on?

Some functions have a prescribed default state for safety or regulatory reasons and may return to it at the beginning of a journey. This can be normal rather than a memory fault. Check the current manual for the particular feature.

Does my Jaecoo save every setting to a driver profile?

No universal promise should be made. Memory functions vary by model and trim, and a saved seat position does not necessarily include infotainment, locking, climate and driver-assistance preferences.

Should I schedule charging in the app, car or wallbox?

Any one of them can be suitable. Choose the system you find easiest to verify and avoid setting conflicting time windows in several places. Test the arrangement before relying on it for a low-cost tariff period or an important journey.

Should I use a factory reset when something stops working?

Only as a considered last step and after checking the manual or support advice. A factory reset can remove paired phones, destinations, accounts and preferences without fixing a vehicle, account or service-side problem.

The sensible way to finish setting up your Jaecoo

The best setup is not the one with the most features enabled or the fewest warnings. It is the one you understand. Configure the essentials while parked, make one change at a time and check what the vehicle remembers after a restart.

Then stop adjusting menus and use the car. After a week, you will know which remaining settings genuinely improve everyday ownership and which ones can be left alone.

Information checked on 23 August 2026. Features, app availability and menu wording can change. Confirm current details in the manual and software supplied with your vehicle.
